Over the last few years, the theatre has arguably become more exciting than ever. According to a survey conducted in spring 2016, over 47 million Americans had attended a live theatrical event within the last month, from local community productions to shows on the Great White Way. The overwhelming success of offerings like Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen have shown that Broadway shows and tickets are extremely in-demand, and that’s not likely to change anytime soon. But with so much variety, it’s tough to decide — not only on the best way to buy Broadway tickets but which shows you really can’t afford to miss.
If you’re looking for something totally fun and full of energy, you can’t go wrong with a pop culture-inspired show. Whether you’re bringing the kids or just want to relive some childhood and teenaged nostalgia yourself, you’ll want to keep these Broadway shows and tickets in mind:
Although you might assume this one’s just for the young, both the advertising and the reviews will tell you that this musical is for absolutely everyone. With original songs by a wide range of artists including Aerosmith, The Flaming Lips, Sara Bareilles (who wrote and stars in her own Broadway hit, Waitress), Cyndi Lauper, They Might Be Giants, and David Bowie, it’s no wonder that the score alone has gotten people talking. Described as “a party for the eyes and ears” by The Daily Beast, this show quickly became a surprise smash this season. Whether or not you were a fan of the Nickelodeon series, you’ll quickly fall in love with Patrick Star, Sandy Cheeks, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and — of course — the titular sponge himself. Don’t be too quick to write this one off; we think this show will have you dancing in your seat and wishing you too lived in a pineapple under the sea.
Unlike the term “fetch,” this is finally happening. The long-anticipated Mean Girls musical is set to begin previews on March 12, 2018, and fans of the cult favorite film cannot wait. In the spirit of Legally Blonde and Heathers, this movie-turned-stage-adaptation promises to include iconic dialogue and the characters we all know and love (or hate, as the case may be). But those not familiar with the film shouldn’t fear: it won’t take long to understand the allure of The Plastics, a terrifying trio of popular teenagers who take the new girl under their pink-adorned wings. Directed and choreographed by renowned Tony Award winner Casey Nickolaw, this production is poised to be one of the “groolest” shows of the season.
For Disney enthusiasts, the cost of Broadway show tickets will be well worth it to see Anna, Elsa, Hans, Olaf, and the whole gang in this larger-than-life stage production. Featuring a cast of Broadway veterans, sparkling costumes and scenery, and the award-winning tunes you can’t get out of your head, there’s nothing quite so magical or infectious. Set to open in February 2018, this stunning tale of two sisters searching for love and acceptance will be sure to captivate the eyes and ears. If you’ve got little princesses and princes of your own, this will probably be a must-see. We’re guessing that once you see this Disney movie come to life on stage, you won’t be so quick to “let it go” right away.
